Gas Tester Training

Gas Tester Training

The international oil and gas industry recognizes that a major objective is to prevent incidents from occurring, and if they do occur, to control them and minimize their effects. Therefore, it is important to set common standards of training and ensure they are maintained. The role of the Authorized Gas Tester (AGT) is critical in testing for and ensuring safe working atmospheres, particularly in permit-controlled confined spaces and before and during hot work. The tasks that authorized gas testers are required to undertake may vary depending on the workplace operations at the time. These tasks also vary in complexity and responsibility.

Therefore, the AGT role has been divided into three levels:

AGT Level 1

Required for those involved in performing tests for oxygen, flammable, and toxic gases, including working in confined spaces.

AGT Level 2

Required for those involved in testing for flammable gas in preparation for hot work.

AGT Level 3

Required for those who provide safety watch duties by ongoing monitoring of a hot work site.

This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills related to various properties of toxic gases, how to measure them safely, and how to interpret the measurement data. The training topics emphasize understanding all the requirements for testing oxygen, toxic, and flammable gases, which cover:

  • Selecting proper personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Relevant codes of practice
  • The hazards of toxic gas and oxygen deficiency
  • Principles of gas testing in confined spaces
  • How to interpret the testing results
  • Various levels of gas toxicity and the acceptable limits
  • Various types of gas detection equipment
