Application of Carbon Biocritters Technology for Accelerating Bioremediation.
Bioremediation involves the process of “Natural Attenuation,” where naturally occurring microorganisms in contaminated soil are used to break down Total Petroleum Carbon (TPH) within crude oil-contaminated soil (COCS). This method has been applied in Indonesia for many years. Additionally, bioremediation is also carried out by introducing a select group of natural and non-pathogenic microorganisms into the COCS to help accelerate the degradation of TPH within the soil.
The select group of environmentally safe microorganisms and specially designed nutrients act as a catalyst to promote and support the already existing indigenous microorganisms within the COCS. This involves the inoculation of specially selected nutrients and oxygen that act as a catalyst by dramatically increasing the colony forming unit (CFU‟s) into the trillions.
As the microbial platelet population increases, the TPH degradation process dramatically speeds up. The bio- augmentation TPH degradation process can be up to 10 times faster than the bio-stimulation process.
BioCritters
BioCritters comprise naturally occurring Class 1 microbes (found in the Berges Manual) that are non- opportunistic and non-pathogenic; The consortium is made up of various microbial species, including Pseudomonas, Bacillus, and Corynebacterium. A combination of aerobic (microbes needing oxygen), anaerobic (microbes not needing oxygen), and facultative anaerobic microorganisms (Microbes adjusting with or without oxygen) are included. The by-products of BioCritters are carbon dioxide, water, and trace elements of harmless fatty acid.
BioCritters is a USA DHEC and FDEP approved, pathogen free product for the biological treatment of hydrocarbon contamination. All microbes are naturally occurring from around the world and pose no risk to human health or the environment. BioCritters and related products are non-toxic and non-pathogenic and have not been genetically altered in any way
BioCritters microbes are grown in and on carbon pellets . Once the carbon pellets are loaded with millions of microbes, they are then gently dried and the BioCritters become inert until re-hydrated for bioremediation. Carbon-pellet hosted BioCritters has an indefinite shelf life, if kept dry, out of sunlight and out of freezing conditions. One kilogram of Carbon BioCritters (packaged along with our nutrient) and will treat at least 10 cubic metres of crude oil contaminated soil.
Bio-Prep NBB
Bio-Prep NBB is an Oxidizer used on solvents and high carbon chain petroleum products. It creates very little heat as compared to other traditional oxidizers. It is a soft, white granular material that completely dissolves in water. Unlike most oxidizers, Bio-Prep NBB offers a quick release into a contaminated plume, dissipating within 24-48 hours following atreatment. The by-products of Bio-Prep NBB are simply liberation of oxygen and generation of limited exothermic heat.
For sites that will be inoculated with our consortium of microbes (i.e. Carbon BioCritters), Bio-Prep NBB is usually injected 2-3 days prior to the microbial treatment. Bio-Prep NBB also reduces unwanted predator microbes from the treatment area while providing oxygen to the aerobic bacteria. One kilogram of Bio-Prep NBB will treat at least 10 cubic metres of crude oil contaminated soil.
